Over the past two months, we have written about two different Mac malware applications that have been making the rounds. First was MacRansom, which showcased a ransomware-as-a-service specifically targeting Mac computers. Then, just last week, we wrote about Fruitfly, the malware that has been found spying on Mac users.
At this point, we should all agree to put the myth that Macs are invulnerable to cybercrime to rest.
While some Mac users still believe that they are safe from cybercrime no matter what site they visit or link they click, many users are now wondering what can be done to make sure their Macs stay free of nefarious software.
Thankfully, there are a number of applications dedicated to keeping your personal Mac’s system clean. Best of all? They’re free to download.
Malwarebytes is a popular anti-malware software that removes malware from your device. What makes Malwarebytes stand out is its simplicity in design and use. Once you run the program, you simply hit “scan” and the program does the rest, checking your Mac for infections. Once the scan is complete, it explains if any malware was found; if malware was detected, Malwarebyte will then remove it.
Malwarebytes consistently updates its virus definitions to ensure protection against new malware threats. While Malwarebytes is commonly associated with PCs, they do have a free Mac version. Switchfast frequently recommends Malwarebytes to those who think their Macs might be compromised.
CCleaner deletes potentially malicious or unwanted temporary files from your Mac. Like Malwarebytes, CCleaner is simple to use. All you have to do is hit the “analyze” button and the app will examine and clean up storage hogs, like web browser caches, temporary files and Windows log files. By removing unnecessary or unwanted files from your computer, your Mac will be back to performing at an optimal level.
Unlike other free anti-virus software, the free version doesn’t bug you with constant upgrade notifications.
Bitdefender Adware Removal Tool for Mac provides protection against malicious programs that can hijack computers and eliminates unwanted or self-installing apps, adware, toolbars and other browser add-ons.
A great feature of Bitdefender is the ability to scan suspicious files or folders by dragging and dropping them into the application. Anything nefarious the malware removal engine detects will be isolated. From there, users are presented with the choice of deleting the file or keeping it.
For Mac users, now is the time to start taking security seriously! Use these tools to gain peace of mind that your Mac is healthy and free of unwanted programs.
Note: These solutions are meant to be for your personal Mac computer and not suggested for business/enterprise. While the software works, we do not recommend relying on free software to protect your business.
